Safety
Is Harlander safe?
Yes. Safety is paramount and trials and safety cases were undertaken in a controlled test track environment, set up to mirror the Belfast Harbour Estate, prior to coming to the city. The Harlander service was operated on the harbour estate, 100% safely, for four weeks prior to carrying any members of the public and the shuttle is fully fitted with all internal safety requirements.
Harlander’s developers have played a central role in the development of autonomous vehicles standards by the British Standards Institute (BSI); they are also the first autonomy company to receive formal recognition from BSI for the quality of their safety case.
Is there a safety operator onboard Harlander?
A fully trained on-board Safety Operator with full driver controls always monitors the technology and can take control if needed, in line with the current UK Law. The operator has undergone an extensive training and monitoring programme and has also had training to ensure all passengers are evacuated from the vehicle securely, should the need arise.
Does Harlander know if someone or something is in its way?
Yes, Harlander is fitted with cameras, lidar and radar, and self-driving software enabling it to operate autonomously by safely navigating the route and responding to traffic and conditions in real-time. If Harlander were to lose internet or GPS capability, our on-board Safety Operator will seamlessly take control.
Are autonomous vehicles vulnerable to hacking?
The cyber security used on Harlander has been built into Oxa’s autonomy software eliminating a single point of failure and increasing cyber security. Oxa is also ISO 27001 certified – the world’s best-known standard for information security management systems (ISMS).
